Here’s a Thought!

, , ,

All of us want to appear knowledgable when we speak in front of colleagues so we try and prepare just enough. Here’s a thought for y’all to help you just do that:

In order to appear well informed , we have to be over informed

What do you think?

Here is a question – Are you an innovative person?

If you are anything like me, you would have read the question as ” did you invent anything new” , compared yourself to Steve Jobs and answered the question as No.

Now read the question as: Did you recently connect the dots in a way that provided a new perspective ? If your answer is Yes , you are definitely an innovative person.

Here is a dirty corporate secret:

Innovation is not always about new , original ideas. Most of the time it is about adding a new dimension, providing a new view to the same old.

So the question we should be asking ourselves is not whether we can think of a new idea but are our experiences different enough to provide a new view.

Here is what I am doing to be an “innovative person”:

  1. Gathering experiences different from my team members – with projects, teams and people that can change my perspective
  2. Reading something that has no connection to my day job
  3. Connecting with people who work in industries / teams that I know nothing about
  4. Keeping a journal of ideas I find interesting. Building a repository of interesting ideas that I can go back to
  5. Working with people I don’t like [ usually reason you don’t like them is because they are different / better than you in something]

I welcome you all to drown out your thoughts of how you are not innovative and “steal with pride”

Book Review : Think like a Freak

Should you read it: probably.

Will you learn a lot from it: definitely not (at least in my opinion!).

When my friends asked me how it was , the only word that kept coming in my mind was “uninspiring”.

Some of the lessons they talk about, actually got me thinking – If applied in today’s world would do more harm than good. For example –

Happy New Year peeps! Hope you had an amazing holiday.

All the crazy parties during the holiday season got me thinking – Do all of us realize the importance of office parties? Or do we just let them slide by if our group of friends is not going?

I believe the biggest myth of modern age – your professional connections should remain professional. But the key thing to realize is that “Promotions are never given to strangers”

So how do you ace the office parties?

It is after all a Jungle Gym..

Every time somebody asks me how are you doing in your job , I am tempted to run out of the room or totally ignore the person. It’s not that I am doing terribly (God I hope not!). Its just that you can never tell can you?  Plus, the work is so much about who your people are? You know, the ones who have your back when your promotions and bonuses and job cuts are being decided.

My first thought – offer Starbucks’ Chai Tea Latte and they would become your friends. I have been told it doesn’t work that way, it’s a lot harder, but does it have to be torture?

If you think about it, there are two simple ways you can start building your army of people at work.

 (1) You could be adopted by a family or (2) You could build a sound base and lay the bricks one at a time

Don’t run away yet! I promise it makes sense. Continue reading

The theory of “KISS”

, , , , , , ,

So I came back from office today, completely exhausted wondering how I didn’t manage to finish my work and yet I am so tired. Where did all my time go?

In a true corporate style, if I created a pie chart of where our time goes and why we feel like above on most days, it would look something like this:

Time Chart

During most meetings, I bet you have the following thought.

Don’t you hate being a part of such meetings? Worst, leading such meetings?

With a simple theory you can actually become a meeting wizard.

The theory of KISS

Simplify the enigma of meetings by:

  • K: Keep an agenda for the meeting
  • I: Initiate the question that needs to be answered by the end of the meeting
  • S: Say what are the pros and cons of taking the decision
  • S: Set the decision and the way forward

From personal experience, I can tell you this will make your meetings productive and actually increase the participation.

From “Oh his meetings are boring and not worth attending” you will easily move to “The meetings are productive, lets go make a decision, it will be fast”

How do you make your meetings productive? What are your tips and tricks…?

What nobody ever tells us ?

So tomorrow is going to be your first day in a new role, in a new job, in a new company. You go online, search about things to do / not to do, how to be successful in a new job and I can bet that you will find 100+ pieces of advice, some new, some old age.

Advice Note

Here are a few things nobody ever tells you:

  1. When you get into the new job, you will be tested no matter your past accomplishments – don’t take it personally
  2. It’s not about how much you accomplish in your job , it’s about what perception you create for yourself
  3. Helpful colleague doesn’t necessarily mean friend; strict colleague doesn’t necessarily mean horrible
  4. Contrary to popular belief of being perfect and professional, show you are a human while you make a mark for yourself
  5. While writing emails marking people higher in the hierarchy – write the email first and then put the recipients
  6. Some days will make you wonder about why people settle for mediocrity, let these days be a lesson for how not to turn out

Be Confident! It will terrify some, surprise many, and impress all

Menu of McBosses

, , , , ,

When we start working somewhere , all we want to do is impress our boss. Some of us would do anything to hear good words from our bosses because at the end of the day that’s what defines your career.

I recently moved to a new team, a new manager and within the first month I caught myself wishing I knew the quirks of my boss so that I could just adjust myself accordingly. Hence, I developed this list that defines the kind of bosses you get so that you don’t have to second guess your first month but impress and take charge from get go!

Mc knows – It – Best

This manager will second guess everything you do. From sending emails to leading the meetings you should be prepared to hear ‘What you did wrong’ while working with this manager. The upside of this manager is that if anything goes wrong in the projects, it’s the managers fault. However, if you want to lead projects , this manager might not be the ideal way to go

The best way to deal with this boss:

  •  Adopt a ‘Yes Sir’ attitude
  • Despite being independent, run almost everything by him in the start to gain his confidence
  • Volunteer to help and give reasons that show that this will help him

Remember ” Its all about him while working under this boss”

Mc Dictator

If your manager refuses to acknowledge or agree with others’ comments , they fall in this category. Such bosses tend to believe in their opinions and will often have loud voice to share their opinion. They are rarely flexible in their ways of working so the best way to excel under them is to learnt their ways of working

The best way to deal with this boss:

  • Avoid confrontational words or tone with this boss when putting across your points
  • Keep them involved in everything or risk them never involving you in any project
  • Ask for advice often in terms of the

With them “Its all about showing that you value their advice more than anything”

Mc Politician

office politics

Politics is synonymous with corporate life and if there is anybody who excels in this race it is this type of boss. He will always know and be pals with the most influential people of the department. You are never too sure of what this boss does and when he works but you will almost always find him in projects which under the spotlight. They will have unbelievable progress in their career. P.S. – I was recently involved in a coup he led against another boss and believe me – you don’t want to be on their wrong side.

The best way to deal with this boss:

  • Always show them in the best light with everybody
  • Take solutions to them and not only problems
  • Limit dependency on them since they most often will be involved in politics
  • Get an alignment from all the stakeholders before taking anything to them for approval

These people like to do things by the book , hence with them “Its all about being perfect”

Mc Buddy

These people tend to be have the ‘I am your friend while I am your leader’. They will joke with you, share their advice and be your best friend. Their way of agreeing or disagreeing is so subtle that you should clarify things with a clear go / no go decision. These leaders believe that because they are your friends you will agree with what they are saying and often that is true! Be aware of this trap and keep your rationale intact.

The best way to deal with this boss:

  • Be their friend and don’t be formal . They will think you are lying to them
  • Share your ideas in a way that adds on theirs to show you are thinking as a friend
  • Keep your rationale and once in a while share your new / different ideas with them to ensure they still think you are worth keeping around
  • Avoid harsh words or strong language even if you are pissed since they will think you are not being a team player

Remember with them “Its all about we are best pals enjoying work”

Mc Dreamy

inspiring boss

Ah! The perfect boss. The dream. A boss who shares the new decisions in the office, motivates you to do your best and gives you your freedom to develop into the leader. He will often joke around and expect his team to be informal with him. This is the kind of boss who will make you hope and trust against your experience, against your better judgment.

The best way to deal with this boss:

  • Be informal
  • Be proactive in terms of working and producing results otherwise you would be moved out of the team
  • Engage with them to learn from their experience. They will be happy to show you the tricks of the trade

Remember with them “show you have potential and work the hardest since they can propel your career”

However, despite reading this if you are thinking you are still stuck, try this

Adopt a Yes Sir attitude and ask for advice , making them feel important

Good luck with your bosses!

Ignorance is Bliss …..Not Anymore!

When you hear about this sentence – what do you think?

Me? Well I always thought the golden rule of corporate world was “be professional and deliver good quality”.

After spending 6 months in Corporate World listening to various advice and observing people, I realized how wrong I was.

The Golden rule to success in Corporate World is a simple statement – ” Perception is Reality”.

Confounded? Read On.. I promise it will sound familiar

Haven’t you worked hard on something fully sure that your peers and bosses are going to commend you on the job well done  and they might as well but then pretty soon somebody comes along just gloating about this amazing brilliant job they did. Blowing their own horn to anybody who would listen. The next thing you know – everybody around you is talking about the amazing thing they did even if it’s not fully completed.

  1. You think maybe his work was better and you will get credit in due time
  2. You wait for sometime but nothing happens and you think maybe you are doing something wrong
  3. You think time will make it better and you quietly embrace (without accepting) Ignorance is Bliss

ignorance quotes

If you didn’t just nod your head in agreement , you are clearly the second person in the story. Congratulations, I am jealous!. But If you are like me  and you identified with the above words – here’s what you do next.

  1. You decide to change the situation as soon as possible
  2. You stop evaluating your work and instead evaluate your perception – what people think about you
  3. Do you have a good perception? A perception which makes people say ” Now there is a star performer”.

If your honest answer is like mine – DON’T REALLY KNOW , then

  1. In the next week talk to 3 -6 different people and ask for their feedback in terms of what they think are your strengths and weaknesses. Their thoughts will give you a fair idea of what your perception is
  2. Secondly, fix time every Thursday / Friday to actively talk to people , build relationships or work on your perceived weaknesses you collected in Action 1

Well as I mentioned in my title “Ignorance is no longer bliss and the age-old wisdom of you can’t do anything about what people think about you – well that’s completely wrong!. “

Starting a new life in Dubai..

Sometimes working hard gives you just what you want and sometimes it tends to give you what you need. Today, I am in a situation where I got what I need but probably not what I wanted at this point. I am wondering is it going to be good, bad, challenging..I am excited. I am going to write about how I learn to live in Dubai. I recently moved to Dubai after living in Delhi and London. People say Dubai spoils you. It teaches you to be a rich jackass because of the money it throws at you but it also makes you miss the small things in life, such as – walking along the street, enjoying a cup of coffee. Hopefully, I will experience the good things while taking the bad things in perspective. Good luck to me 🙂
